I understand that 99.6 is the average normal for a rectal temp as is 98.6 for an oral temp from what I have read online.

I took mine yesterday with both a glass mercury rectal thermometer and a Geratherm Thermometer Oral Mercury Free. The glass mercury reading was 98.2 and the Geratherm gave me a reading of 97.4.
I left the inserted in my rectum for 5 minutes and held them in place. Is a reading under the average normal rectal temp normal?

Well it's not normal by definition, but it's not unusual either. "Normal" is just the average across lots of people. Some people, like my wife, consistently have lower temperatures. It is good to know this since if you typically read low, that means when you read "normal" you may have a fever. You should take your temperature over several weeks when you feel well to see if you do tend to read low. That way you'll know for when you actually do get sick.

I took my rectal temperature two or three times yesterday with a digital thermometer. Reading was 99.4F. I then re-took it with a glass mercury rectal thermometer. 100.2F. I repeated these readings a few hours later. Pretty much the same results. Digital was up to 99.7F while the rectal glass mercury thermometer registered 100.2F. Give me the glass mercury rectal thermometer over the rest.

Time of day, weather conditions, etc., can have an effect. If you have a fever, what's the difference between a fraction of a degree anyway ? You're still going to treat it with the same aspirin, or antibiotics.
