 linda i agree with what u did to ur son. i took my temp orally once and it was like normal then i took it rectally and it showed i had a small fever. somtimes my oral temps and rectal temps are almost 2 degrees higher in difference. linda i would trust the rectal thermometer from now on. yes 14 year olds can have there temp taken rectally, they might groan and give fuss but it is truly the best way to do it, so yes i would do it rectally from now on and if ur son gives fuss just tell him that u need to do it cause it is more accurate and that u care about him and want the best for him and his health. it will be ok
