Unless there's a medically-compelling reason, or at the direction of a healthcare professional such as a doctor or nurse, NO!
Today's non-invasive thermometers are quite accurate enough.
I raised two daughters, now in their 20s, and it was extremely rare after their toddler years that I ever needed (or was asked by our doctor) to use a rectal thermometer.

Some of you are veering off into medfet land. Times have changed....alot. This isn't the 1950's or 60's. If rectal temps. and accuracy were so crucial, then why is it that the medical community doesn't endorse them anymore, even for kids ? Do some of you think that your knowledge is superior to a licensed physician or healthcare worker? If you deem it necessary to take a child's rectal temp., then you are probably doing it to get off on your own fetish. That isn't fair for your child to do that to them.
