Yes, there are more less invasive thermometers these days. That being said, apparently this woman had a rectal thermometer of some type in her home. She used it to take her son's temperature, doing so rectally. And if I read her post correctly, I take it that this may not have been his first rectal temperature taking as a teen. I understand that the rectal method is not generally welcomed by most patients, be they at home or in a medical facility, but I also understand it is the most accurate reading to be obtained. I don't necesaarily agreee with you on your last statement that after 8, 9 years of age, that no need to stick "things" up your butt. If a parent feels it is necessary and opts for a rectal reading, that is their right and duty as a parent to tend to their children as they deem most appropriate for the child's health.
