Anonymity allows a person to truthfully tell an interested audience something about taking a kid's temperature rectally with a glass thermometer while at the same time it allows another person will express a fantasy about the same thing.

What I wonder is that since nearly all physicians, at least in metropolitan areas, have abandoned the glass thermometer in favor of the electronic non-invasive types, imagine the reaction of a doctor when told that a kid still has a rectal temperature taken with a glass thermometer. Otherwise, the only explanation for that scenario would be it taken place in a much lower level of our society exists where a physician is comfortable about not making that transition. There are no statistics to verify that senario one way or another, although I would not be surprised either way.

Eventually, the rectal temperature fascination will go away with the passing of time.

Take a look at the role history has played in medicine. Years ago, it was considered healthy to soak up the sun, eat red meat, eggs, and butter. During the 19th century, and beyond, leaches were used to suck blood from patients, and the night air was considered unhealthy. Fast forward to temperature taking. Rectal temps. were deemed the most accurate, and were the choice of many households and hospitals. I'm under the impression that it's rare today, and probably will cease to exist in 20 years, or less. I don't even know if the pediatric wards, once famous for rectal temps. from newborns to young adults, even uses them now. I would imagine that it's very uncommon.

It is a controversial topic indeed.
