I am from Poland. I have 4 brothers and sisters. And I know that the younger ones are still have it rectally.

One of my girlfriends from college (then in her 30s) was vacationing with her husband in France and became quite ill. A hotel nurse came to Amanda's room over a period of three days and each time took her temp rectally. She also treated Amanda's fever with suppositories, apparently quite common in France at the time. This was about 20 years ago.

A had a same thing happen to me about 25 years ago I was vacationing in France. I had a up set stomach so I went to the local hospital ER. I was siting on the exam table dressed in a hospital johnnie. The nurse asked to lie down and roll over. She the proceeded to take my temperature rectally.
My fever was also treated with suppositories.
