I actually had the exact same thought.

When does one stop becoming a child. When I was a kid, what made it worse was our doctor. We didn't have pediatricians back then, we all when to the same doctor. One of the things I remember most clearly was at age 11 I had to go to the doctor with a sore throat. When it came time to take my temperature he asked my mother, "How do you take it at home. Oral or Rectal?"

So 1 minute later there I am pants and briefs at my knees with a thermometer sticking out my butt. I didn't give it much thought at the time, but now looking back I realize that if the doctor was asking, that meant that there must be some 11 year olds who have graduated to oral. Now thinking back on it all that really sends a tingle through me. To think that I was still considered a "child" at 11 while others might be considered adults.

For me, the most powerful emotion in rectal temps is the thought that I am in a submissive and vulnerable position. The feeling of helplessness and weakness. That feeling for me gets magnified by the thought that while I may be lying face down on the exam table with my pants down and my backside exposed a peer of mine, the same age, is sitting up fully clothed. I guess I was still a child at that age and I got the "Rectal Bulb for Children"

I'm in my mid-fifties, and never had a rectal temp. taken after age 5, or 6. I did have some friends who's mom would take their temp. rectally, well into their teens. There were probably more than I was even aware of. I always heard stories from teens who had surgeries or illnesses that required hospital stays. They were surprised to have their temp taken rectaly, and were ashamed to talk about it. The Taylor Ad from 1949, probably refers to a child as an age range that would include newborn to around, maybe 7, or 8, I'm guessing. There has always been a few reasons for a rectal temp. taken at home, or at the doctor. Accuracy, inability to safely hold the thermometer under the tongue, or just a personal preference, either on the child's part, or the parents. And, I can tell you that I doubt that many children or teens had a say in the matter.

Rick,

Did the doctor always take your temp or did the nurse take it also? How did you feel when you heard your mom answer the question? Did you feel shame in the waiting room when there were other kids there, knowing that they may be getting oral temps and you were going to get a rectal temp?

I know that feeling however, I always felt shame with having to get rectal temps for being a mouth breather until I was 14. The shame was palpable as I could still feel the vaseline while standing in the waiting room while my mom paid the bill. One of the more embarrassing times was on my 12 year old check up. The nurse would have you undress and then take you into the hall to be weighed. I as always was stripped to my underwear and taken to the hall where I met a neighbor boy who was there for his 10 year old check up. He was wearing his shorts in addition to his underwear. There was an 8 year old boy on the scale also in just his underwear.

I told my friend that I guess his nurse was nicer for letting him wear his shorts out to the scale. I think he bought that story, but looking back I know that my friend returned to the exam room and got a thermometer put in his mouth. Myself and the 8 year old boy were in our underwear because that underwear was going to be pulled down to our ankles, and we were going to lay bare bottom up on the paper lined exam table while a well lubed thermometer was impaled in our rectum. I could still feel the shame as I stood in the waiting room waiting for my mom to pay as my friend walked out and I felt he knew that I had just had a thermometer up my butt like a baby while he had gotten an oral temp. Looking back I don't think he had put it together, but I still felt ashamed.

Like I said. At the time it didn't occur to me. It is one of those things that looking back on it with the wisdom of an adult I can see more clearly.

I now reason that if the doctor asked my mother how to take my temperature, then it meant that other kids my age were not getting taken rectally. I wish I could go back and take a survey to find out what percentage of 11 year olds had it oral and what percentage had it rectally. At the time I just assumed all kids had it taken rectally.

That said, I do recall leaving the waiting room with the greasy feeling between my butt cheeks and being very aware of all the other kids in the waiting room. I swore they were looking at me like they all knew I just had my temp taken in my hieney.

Sorry,

Forgot to answer your question. Yes, many times it was the nurse who took the temperature.

You just triggered a memory for me. I also just assumed all kids got their temperatures taken rectally.

I was 8 years old and playing "doctor" with a girl (also 8) who lived down the street. She had the toy doctor kit, so I was the patient. We were fully clothed as she used all the play instruments on me (ear light, stethoscope, etc.) She then pulled out the toy thermometer and shook it down and said she was going to "take my temperature" I kept my clothes on, but laid down on my stomach assuming she would pretend to take my temperature.

She then said, what are you doing silly? I replied, aren't you going to take my temperature. She laughed and said, in your mouth silly. She then asked, how does your mother take it? I jumped up and lied, in my mouth why? She laughed again and said, I bet she takes it the baby way? I denied it and the game continued, but I knew then and there that not only did she have hers taken orally, but that she also knew I was lying and she knew my mom still took it rectally.

Before you ask, no I did not get to be the doctor. so I never got the chance to ask her to "roll over"
