 I was treated in the ER in France about 4 years ago for a minor ailment. My temp was taken, in the mouth with an electronic thermometer. I was hoping it would be done 'the old way' but unfortunately not. The nurse was very attractive however.

It seems that non-invasive temperature measurement is on the cutting edge these days, and rectal temps. if taken, are probably done more at home than in medical facilities, unless the patient is suffering from a heat-related or hypothermia situation. Maybe it's a global move toward increased modesty and concern for the patient, and a realization that a few degrees difference in accuracy isn't likely to change the diagnosis, or course of treatment.
