I remember,clearly,the "whip-like" sound of the thermometer being shaken down by my mother.I would already be on my stomach,bottom bared.Mom whould shake it,stop and hold it up to the light,and shake it again before she was satisfied the rectal thermometer was ready.Then she would turn and lubricate it with petroleum jelly.She would then bend over me and spread my buttocks apart and aim at the center of my anus.Mom would make the firm,but gentle insertion and check her watch as she sat down beside me to make sure I stayed still for the full three minutes.
