When I was 7 Mom asked me if I wanted to continue with rectal temps (like Mom and Grandma did when they were sick) or if I wanted to take my temps in my armpit. I decided for my butt. Later I asked my 4 daughters the same - they still take rectal temps.

I was the oldest of three. My sister was 2 1/2 years younger and my brother 7 years younger so we had rectal thermometers (and oral that my parents used) until I was at least 12 or 13. I switched to oral around age 7 I think. I suspect the first time it was because my sister was also sick (maybe my brother as well) and Mom used the oral thermometer so she could take my temperature at the same time as one or both of them.
But I didn't switch permanently. I know that in second grade I started faking being sick to not go to school. I recall once my mother bringing the the rectal thermometer in. I complained and said I didn't use the baby one any more to which my mother replied something along the lines of she was using this one and if I didn't have a temperature I'd be staying right over her lap with my pajama pants down.
Mom continued to use the rectal thermometer if she thought I might be faking, but I didn't fake much after that one spanking nor did I always get a spanking if I didn't have a temperature. (Not all colds result in a fever of course.) I think Mom could probably pretty much tell if I was faking even without taking my temperature so she didn't need to run that test, but did so sort of a gauge as to exactly how sick I really thought I was feeling.
