If you were to have your temperature taken rectally, or asked for it to be taken rectally, did you have a preference for the type thermometer used? There may well still be glass-mercury rectal thermometers that are used either in domestic settings or medical settings. I know too, there are digital thermometers as well as electronic rectal probes that are used from IVAC and FILAC and perhapd Welch-Allyn units.
Which would you prefer and why?

Glass-mercury all the way. It's more reliable and there aren't any batteries to worry about. And if the thermometer has a nice, plump, pear-shaped bulb, it feels wonderful.

I would opt for the glass, as well. It's what was used on me growing up, and they bring back strong memories. I have a couple of my own, and to my shock, last time I was visiting mom, I saw a pear shaped bulb thermometer sitting in a ceramic whale I made in grade school on the bathroom counter. If I got sick at mom's, I bet she would still use it, I haven't seen any other thermometers in her bathroom.

The reason i ask is that is the only type of thermometer in my parents house also and their not afraid to use it That thermometer has to be about 65 years old and was used many times on me growing up and a few times as an adult and it still works like a charm.tha'ts all they use .

I am the only child, and so far as I know, no one else had been over there. I think she just uses it on herself. It was kind of shocking to see it again though, and right out in the open.

The glass rectal mercury never needs a battery, never fails and is always accurate. It also gives a "tingle" that can't be beat when inserted slowly into the anus and up the rectum.GLASS RECTAL MERCURY IS THE WAY TO GO.

Richard, It has to be an old-fashioned glass thermometer for me. I've tried many other types, but I still prefer "the tingle factor" that the small glass ones give in my bottom.

The bulb makes all the difference in the world. If it's nice and plump, I can feel it even when the thermometer is fully inserted. Then there's the sensation of inserting it an inch or so....

Yes, I prefer the traditional glass thermometer, too. Because I like the "tingle factor", too. :)

I just bought a glass rectal thermometer on ebay. I love having my temperature taken rectally. I remember being a kid and I woke up once. My mom said I looked funny and that she was going to take my temperature. She said she was going to get the thermometer. She asked me to go lay down on the couch. She came back with a white tube and asked me to roll over and pull down my pjs. Then she had me put me rear up a little. My pjs were down past my knees. I felt it go in and if felt really cold and wet. I laid there for about 5 min. My sister kept looking at me. My mom came back and pulled it out. She was upset. I had a fever of 102.8. She called the dr. right away. I remember sher saying that she took my temperature rectally. She got me dressed and off we went to the dr. office. They took my temperature in the bottom there too. I loved being on top of the table with a thermometer in my rear. I remember there was a boy who was in the hall way that was watching. The dr said I was really sick and my mom should take my temp every few hours. That want on for about 6 or 7 days. I kept pulling my pants down and getting the glass thermometer in my rear. I do miss it.

Welcome to the club, Tina! I know you'll put that thermometer to good use. Here's to many more rectal temps. Bottoms up! (sorry, Jen)
