 When I was a kid and went to the doctor we waited till called into the exam room. Once there it was everything off except underwear and you sat on the table. The nurse came in a took the rectal thermometer out of the bin it was in. She told you on your stomach and pulled your underwear down to below your butt. She stuck the thermometer in you and left but didn't close the door all the way. Anyone walking by would look in and see you laying there with the thermometer stuck in your butt. This happened almost all the time. Has anyone else experienced this and what was your reaction? Share your story at the pediatricians office.

It was common at military service clinics up through the 1960's to take rectal temperatures at a station set up for that purpose right there in the waiting room. The patient would lie face down on a table with his/her rear end uncovered. A child was considered nothing more than an object that the medical staff could use to capture a temperature reading.

Although it was common for a rectal temperature to be mandatory up to the age of 5 years old, it was not uncommon to see would be called today a "special needs" to have a rectal temperature taken as well.

It seems to me that getting a rectal temp at the pediatrician's office was supposed to be private, in that the door was closed, but it seems as though the nurse would frequently be asked a question or given a message by another nurse or staff member. It didn't happen all the time, but it happened often enough.

The "barge in" happened twice, the most memorable was at my last rectal temperature in the doctor's office at 12 years old. With me, the procedure was similar as above, you were taken back, told to get undressed to your undies, the nurse came in and took your pulse and blood pressure, then told you to "slide your undies down and lay on your tummy for me." I had to take them down to my knees, I had tried just pulling them down below my bottom once, but was told they had to come down further.

About half way through this particular time, the doctor barged in while the nurse was still holding the thermometer in my bottom. He was apparently expecting us to be done, acted kind of startled, then quietly said something to the nurse before announcing he would be back later. The door was never closed while he stood there, and of course I imagined that the whole world was watching me get my temperature taken in the bottom, and laughing at me. I couldn't move, though, because the nurse was holding the thermometer in, and there was no way to really hide anything anyway. It seemed like forever, but was probably only a few seconds.

I was sent to the nurses office in the 4th grade by my teacher who said I looked pale. I was very small and timid at that age and was often bullied by the bigger boys. When the nurse stuck the thermometer in my mouth it made me gag and I spit it out (even though I had my temp taken orally many times before) It smashed on floor in a pieces. The nurse said she had no other choice now but to take my temperature in my bottom. I begged her not to but she grew inpatient with me and threatened to get the principle. Defeated, I followed her instruction and lied down on the bed on my stomach. I felt her hands go inside the waistband of my pants and tug them down to below my knees.
I was half naked in the middle of school with a thermometer sticking out from between my bottom cheeks when the door to the nurses office opened. Much to my dismay, in walked two boys from my class who often picked on me and teased me about my small stature. They immmediately started laughing and staring and calling me a baby. The nurse at this time had gone in the principles office to call my mom, so I could do nothing to regain my dignity. finally the nurse returned to the office and told them to leave.
My mom picked me up and I went home. I worried all day that now the entire class would find out that the nurse took my rectal temp. Sure enough when I returned to school 2 days later everyone knew what happened to me in the nurses office.

This topic brings back lots of memories. I vividly remember the nurse pushing the door closed, but it was done in a casual way so that the door usually remained half way open. In today's world it would be tightly closed, or you could ask your parent who was with you in the room to close it, but growing up in the 70's was a different time. I was seen countless times getting my temperature taken in the rectum, as well as being examined by the doctor in various stages of undress, and yes, sometimes completely naked. Of course, the door swung both ways, in that I got to see others in a similar situation. My pediatrician office switched to oral temperature at age 13, but if you had a fever it would be re-taken by rectum. I went to the same pediatrician through the end of college and the only times I got my temperature taken orally was during a routine physical, or back to school physical, etc. Any other time I went to the doctor, it was because I was sick, which was usually twice a year. It wasn't a lot of fun getting your temperature taken at 18 or 19 and having the nurse say "you're very warm, I'm going to need you to lie down on your belly so I can get a more accurate reading." This was not a pleasurable experience, but I always reluctantly complied. Anytime I heard those words I got a weird sensation in the pit of my stomach in anticipation for what would happen next. The nurse never had me pull my underpants down, rather she always did it herself, and it always seemed that the amount of vaseline she used on the thermometer could have taken the temperatures of 5 people. The worst part was not being seen naked by the nurse or my dad, as they had seen me naked many times before, but being seen by other patients on their way to and from other examining rooms, as well as the feeling, while lying helplessly face down on the table, that I was getting my temperature taken in the same way a baby or a little kid got theirs. The last time someone took my temperature rectally was at 23 years old in a hospital ER.
