This topic brings back lots of memories. I vividly remember the nurse pushing the door closed, but it was done in a casual way so that the door usually remained half way open. In today's world it would be tightly closed, or you could ask your parent who was with you in the room to close it, but growing up in the 70's was a different time. I was seen countless times getting my temperature taken in the rectum, as well as being examined by the doctor in various stages of undress, and yes, sometimes completely naked. Of course, the door swung both ways, in that I got to see others in a similar situation. My pediatrician office switched to oral temperature at age 13, but if you had a fever it would be re-taken by rectum. I went to the same pediatrician through the end of college and the only times I got my temperature taken orally was during a routine physical, or back to school physical, etc. Any other time I went to the doctor, it was because I was sick, which was usually twice a year. It wasn't a lot of fun getting your temperature taken at 18 or 19 and having the nurse say "you're very warm, I'm going to need you to lie down on your belly so I can get a more accurate reading." This was not a pleasurable experience, but I always reluctantly complied. Anytime I heard those words I got a weird sensation in the pit of my stomach in anticipation for what would happen next. The nurse never had me pull my underpants down, rather she always did it herself, and it always seemed that the amount of vaseline she used on the thermometer could have taken the temperatures of 5 people. The worst part was not being seen naked by the nurse or my dad, as they had seen me naked many times before, but being seen by other patients on their way to and from other examining rooms, as well as the feeling, while lying helplessly face down on the table, that I was getting my temperature taken in the same way a baby or a little kid got theirs. The last time someone took my temperature rectally was at 23 years old in a hospital ER.
