You are NOT gross or kinky. Rectal is what works for you, and nobody needs to know. If you call or visit a doctor, you do need to inform them that the temperature was taken rectally, so they know, and they won't think you are weird. BTW, the "normal" for rectal is 99.6 degrees, not 98.6. It is the only way that gives me the consistent accuracy I require for metabolism monitoring. The newer ways of taking temperature were developed for ease of use and social acceptability, not accuracy. Unless it was considered "normal" for people's temperatures to be taken rectally, they would feel strange and squawk about being told to drop their pants to have their temperature taken. Hypothermia patient's temperatures are always taken rectally, because true core temperature can only be ascertained that way, and the goal is to re-warm their core.
