Growing up,we had one oral thermometer and one rectal thermometer. The rectal was stored in a white plastic case with a screw-on top.Up to age 6 we all had rectal temps and beyond that you were "switched" to the oral thermometer.I remember being sick as a young boy and having my temperature taken rectally. My sister was sick at the same time. After mom took mine, she wiped it with a tissue and noted the reading. The thermometer was cleaned with alcohol and then dipped into the vaseline. It was then inserted up my sisters rectum as I lay on the bed next to her.Her temperature was noted and the thermometer cleaned again for the next round of temperatures. Mom still has that rectal thermometer in her medicine chest 50 years later.

In our house, we had a shared rectal thermometer when I was little. I can vaguely remember lying on the sofa in the living room as my temperature was being taken rectally. At the time I didn't care for the rectal method. That thermometer eventually disappeared - at least I never saw it again once my temp at home was taken orally.
I finally had my own personal rectal thermometer (my parents never found out about it) when I was 13, although I missed a golden opportunity to acquire one some five years earlier. I was at a drugstore not far from our house and there were rectal thermometers openly displayed that were for sale. Why I didn't buy one then is something I'll never know.
