I went out for a run a few days ago and I guess I didn't hydrate enough, I passed out on the side walk and some nice people stoped and gave me some water and called an ambulance. When we got to the hospital the first thing they did was to take my rectal temperature. I was a little emberassed because I was on my side in full view of everyone but I know they just wanted to know I was alright. The doctor said I should stay off my feet for a few days. I was thinking that I should learn how to take my own temperature before every run. Are there any instructional videos on how to do this? Please post a link for me thanks!

Hi Liz:
It depends on how you opt to take it. You have four common routes: Oral, rectal, ear or underarm.

You might want to discuss this with your healthcare provider, explaining your recent circumstances. I am sure he or she can explain how to do this or you can possibly have it explained, and demonstrated( taken by him/her.), though if you want a rectal, well you'd have to ask again, if that's how your care provider might opt to take a temperature. Probably not too common, though not unheard of.

With today's digital thermometers, a readout, regardless of route used, is simple and can be in F or C scale. That would be true if you had a electronic unit (digital too) A glass thermometer, though not easy to come by unless you buy a GERATHERM, or get an older one from e-bay, are a bit tricky to read, particularly if your eyesight isn't so good.

Anyway, good luck and let the board know how you made out.

Liz,
There's not too much more to find out about taking your temperature rectally, which it seems you choose to do. If this is what you will be doing, then it is a simple matter of purchasing a thermometer of some type, knowing how to use it, letting it remain inserted for the alloted time for the particular type instrument(glass mercury, GERATHERM, digital or electronic)and then reading it. Or, if you know someone who would be willing to do this for you, let them take your temperature, both before and after your running.
