I agree with you that in most cases child older than 5 years old is too old to have their rectal temperature taken unless there is some counterindication to using other methods. From a personal perspective, when I was 9 years old in the early 1990s, I once had to have my rectal temperature taken with a digital thermometer during an ER visit resulting from a mouth injury which made taking oral temperature infeasible. I will admit that when the ER nurse told me that she needed to take my rectal temperature, my first thought was “um, OK” because I was not used to having my temperature taken that way at home, but I do remember my sister who is six years younger than me having her rectal temperature taken at home around that same time. After that moment of hesitation, I pulled my pants and underwear down and rolled over on the hospital bed allowing the ER nurse to take my temperature. In the end, the whole process took less than a few minutes, and was not really that big a deal. For those of you who might be wondering why other methods were not used, as noted earlier I was in the ER with a mouth injury which made oral temperature infeasible, armpit temperature which my Mom normally used for me at home was not offered at the ER, and the ear and forehead thermometers had not been developed at that time nor are they currently recommended by the hospital I went for accuracy. (btw: I already mentioned that incident in another comment thread under the name Tom2 in order to avoid possible confusion with another person named Tom who regularly posts on this forum)
