As I explained in detail in the other comment thread, I was in the ER for a mouth injury which rendered taking oral temperature infeasible, armpit temperature which my Mom used for me at home was not offered at the ER, and the ear and forehead thermometers had not been developed at the time (early 1990s), nor are they currently reccomended for use by the hospital I went to. While I can understand the "ick" factor attached to rectal temperature, my first thought when the ER nurse told me what she needed to do was "um, OK", the whole experience lasted less than a few minutes in part because she used a digital thermometer and was not that big of a deal. For me this was the only time I had my rectal temperature taken at that particular hospital, and in other visits when I was in for something other than a mouth injury, they took it orally. By the way, I have never heard of any government regulations regarding the practice of rectal temperature taking in hospitals in the United States.
