For taking a rectal temperature of a child age 8 to 12 years old, a 5 inch veterinary thermometer is the right size. It allows for deeper penetration of at least an inch and a half and yet at an inch an a half is visible protruding from the child's bottom, assuming the child is lying flat on his/her abdomen. The glass ring can be removed and shaped like a conventional fever thermometer. It is also considerably thicker than a standard 4 in glass rectal thermometer. It may be necessary to leave it in place over 3 minutes.

I play the drums as a hobby. As a teenager, I discovered those drum sticks have more than one fun use!! Eventually, I sawed the stick into a 6" length, perfect for insertion. One end is tapered with a bead on it. The other is big and rounded off smooth. The different end give a variety of feelings in the butt. Vaseline is the best for wood things I think.

I'm a percussionist myself, but a drumstick is one thing I've never tried. That cigar tube I used to use was about the same diameter as a 3S field drum stick.
