I am from a different generation. My mother was a registered nurse---She did take our temperatures in the butt. I bet we still got it that way at 14----Iwas used to it as were my brothers---so I do not think it was a big deal at all. It certainly did not hurt at all. In a big family of boys --I think a mother has sort of a dispensation so to speak--as to a nbecessary spanking or taking a rectal temp or stuff like that--It was just part of her job. I do recall infrequent times the doctor came and he did temp in the butt also----Was i suppossed to be more accurate or something--I am speaking of the 50's ealy 60's??? I wonder why i was done that way though I did not mind it really

great comment BobN-similiar for me as well-but my mom was not a RN-our neighbor was-she worked at the same dr clinic I went to-she took my rt many time's-at the dr clinic and at our house-(if I was sick or mom called her on the weekend)-I was switched from rt to oral-when younger-but didn't like it-I asked mom if I could continue with rt-she said yes-it was also noted on the medical chart at the dr clinic-so the nurse's knew I got rt at home-it was routine for rt at the dr clinic. All the nurse's said rt was the most accurate method to take temp reading.
