Some medical professionals insist that a rectal temperature is uncomfortable. Perhaps a youngster may feel uncomfortable about getting his temperature taken rectally, but physically a rectal temperature is a lot more comfortable than an oral temperature.

I believe the issue of rectal vs. oral is more psychological than physical. If you talk to anybody and the subject comes up,(rectal temperatures) more than likely, most will have negative comments. Again I think it's more a psychological issue involving embarrassment, shame, the mentality of "it's dirty", "I'm too old for that", etc. And too, we here in America have a good deal of prudishness in us that makes us feel the way we do about rectal temperature taking.
The actual taking of a temperature can be a painful matter, especially rectally, if the person taking the rectal temperature does it in an irresponsible manner or does not have the skill to take a rectal temperature. I can relate from experience, having had a colon therapist "shove" a thermometer into my rectum actually causing me pain. As for oral, if you do it improperly, no doubt with an elongated bulb (glass thermometer) it can cause pain and hurt as well.
It pretty much comes down to 1. Your preference, 2, who is taking your temperature and 3, How carefully they do it.

I agree, it is not a question of comfortable. but who is taking your temperature and how he does it. And maybe if you were used to it in the past ...

I never had pain. I was only ugly if it was pushed in too fast while I did not relax. And if it was too deep.
