I was a young teen during the late 60's, and can remember some of my friend's had their temp. taken rectally, which to me was odd, since mine stopped being taken that way both at home and at the doctor's by age 5. I believe that there was a large following of mothers who had grown up with the belief that rectal temps. were the gold standard. However, the slight difference in accuracy wasn't enough to convince the medical community, otherwise, why didn't they follow the european trend of rectal temps. on all ages ? I think the typical family stopped using rectal temps. on their kids around age 5 or 6.
