It would be next to impossible these days to take someone's temp. rectally, unless they were really out of it. I would imagine that the idea is totally off the wall for someone under let's say, 30. I know from experience that pediatricians within the past 15 years perhaps, become furious if you disclose that you took a child's temp. rectally. When my youngest daughter was 7, during the mid 90's, I had such an experience. The way the doctor scolded me, I was sure that she was going to have me charged with child abuse. Interestingly, the digital oral thermometer registered a normal temp., while the glass rectal thermometer registered 103. Had I not brought my daughter to the ER that night, I believe that she may not have been so lucky. The early antibiotic treatment made a difference.
