 It seems like the nurses always used more Vaseline than necessary, sometimes covering at least 1/2 of the rectal thermometer. That's alot of Vaseline to take the temperature of a little kid, but they always did it that way anyway. They usually took my temperature for a full 5 minutes before pulling out the messy thermometer, and once they even took it twice.

My nurses never put that much, they just put a glob. But when you sit in it, get examined, get your shot in the butt at the end, walk to the car, ride home, etc., it eventually becomes a greasy mess. Yes, half the thermometer is way too much. And I always had it in exactly 3 minutes at the doctor. But 3 minutes lying undies down on a cold table with spectators is long enough to etch the experience in your mind.
