First, at a certain age many kids resist being held down and examinated completely. They will resist the ear exam, the nose exam, abdominal exam, and the throat exam. They will even push away a stethescope, even if placed over the clothes (so it is not a matter of it being cold). Second, at a certain age embarrassment enters the picture. But mostly, I believe it is a matter of muscle tension. The child is placed in a position where they often receive shots or uncomfortable suppositories/enemas. They then tense up and inserting the thermometer against tension, expecially if the temperature-taker has trouble seeing the opening (due to clenched buttocks) and they have to "poke around" to find the opening. So the child experiences discomfort. Thereafter, this discomfort is anticipated, again leading to the muscle tension/resistance in future temps. In contrast, you are able to relax and enjoy anal sex.
