Years ago when I was in my early 20s a visiting nurse cared for me at home after I spent a month in the hospital. I had been critically injured in an accident and suffered broken bones in my face, plus other injuries.
When Angie (an RN) visited that first afternoon at home, I remember being in bed and Angie finishing listening to my heart and lungs with her stethoscope. She took out a small case with a thermometer and shook it down, then sat down gently on the side of my bed and told me that she needed a "base temp" and would I mind her taking it rectally (instead of an underarm). My jaw was still wired from a hospital surgery. I'd had rectals taken in the hospital, so by then it was very routine.
I still remember all this because when Angie said she was searching her bag for a lubricant, she joked that she couldn't find it. She asked my husband if we had something she could use. We had K-Y and Vaseline. Angie chose the K-Y.
