I honestly don't believe that this idea would have any followers outside of this forum. If you did an objective study, I would imagine that most people prefer an oral temperature. The AMA is a very formal organization comprised of lawyers, doctors, and other "professionals", who are there to "protect the public", but in reality, they are in the business of making $$$, and covering up for doctors who are obnoxious, unethical, and incompetent. Try to file a (legitimate) lawsuit against ANY doctor, and see just how unwilling the AMA is to get involved. The local medical licensing boards aren't much better. A number of patients have to die, before they will conduct an investigation.

If a patient did this, and the patient injured him/herself with the procedure; don't you think there'd be lawsuits all over the place? That's what caregivers do..they on occasion take patients' rectal temperature and DO NOT leave them unattended.

The idea of the AMA getting involved is ridiculous. Since when does any organization dictate temperature taking procedures ? A nurse is not going to leave an expensive instrument in a patient's room, unattended. When they enter the room, they typically have the electronic thermometer, and/or a blood pressure measurement device. They move from room to room, taking vitals and noting the results. It would be sloppy and careless to do otherwise. I know that some of you might like to see a section of the hospital labeled "Medical Fetish Section." Ain't gonna happen.

My PCP's exam rooms have both an electronic thermometer and the blood pressure equipment installed & attached to the wall next to the exam table. They apparently also have the old fashioned manual equipment in reserve. I stopped for a blood pressure checkup a few months ago & the nurse had to use a manual device after the automatic inflator on the wall-mounted unit errored out several times.
