I believe that thermometers were commercially manufactured in NY, NJ, and other states around the late 19th century, when the introduction of new techniques streamlined the process. If you have an old BD, Taylor, or other brand thermometer, the inscription on the box says "since 1897," or something similar. The question that I have is whether rectal was the only means of temperature taking in the U.S., until oral thermometers were available, and if so, for how many years. I don't know if this info. is readily available, or even possible to find.
