As a boy growing up, unless you were in bed and mom let you stay on your tummy, you always had to be exposed at some point before and after. I grew up in the era of rectal thermometers and undressing to your underwear being a routine part of every doctor visit, and rectal thermometers being "standard" at home.
At the doctor, I had to slip my underwear down on the table when it was time for my temperature, and I remember as I got older (around 9) trying to stay somewhat modest. One time I tried just pulling my undies down below my bottom, but the nurse insisted they had to come down at least to my knees. I remember everything "flopping out" as I slid my undies down to my knees, while mom and the nurse looked on. That was at age 12, and I was extremely embarassed at how obvious everything was flopping around, while I had tried so hard to be dignified. Most other times the undressing wasn't so bad, I did it while the nurse had her back turned and was prepping the thermometer. After the temp was always the worst. I tried different techniques, but there was no way to be dignified. It seems to me that at some point I decided that rolling over on my back and pulling my knees up to reach my undies was the fastest way to get them back in place. It's funny (now) how much thought I put into it as a child, considering I had always spent an entire 3 minutes with the nurse holding a greasy thermometer in my bottom, spreading my bottom and pretty much seeing the most undignified side of me possible.
At home was not as bad. I had my temp taken on my tummy and side. Laying on my side exposed everything, and was the most common way it was done at home. It didn't bother me at home as much, because it was just mom, who had seen it all several times before. It was more embarassing being older and having a greasy thermometer pulled out of your bottom, and being wiped.
