Hi,

I never read the novel nor saw the film, " one flew over the cuckoo's nest, " but have heard summaries of invasive procedures being performed by a sadistic nurse.. Was there ever a reference made in the novel, or a scene in the film of a rectal temperature being administered?

I remember the movie and I don't think there was a reference to a"rectal temperature".There was, however,a scene where "patients" line up for their medication.Jack Nicholson's character refuses his meds.Nurse Ratchet says"If you refuse to take your medication orally,we can give it to you another way." a possible threat to injection or rectal administration.

I have that movie. You're right, Tom. No reference to an RT, but the suppo threat was there for sure.

Thanks guys. I did manage to watch several segments of the movie on youtube, and viewed the scene where nurse Ratchet made the comment. The novel may have had more detail and perhaps even some additional occurences, but I don't have much time for books these days.

The book referenced an rt. One of the nurses told an orderly to get some vaseline for the thermometer.

The book and the movie were markedly different with reference to the rt. In real life, it would stand to reason that a rectal temp. would be taken in a psychiatric ward, as a safety precaution. People seldom are admitted against their will for displaying sound and rational thoughts. And they receive many patients who have attempted suicide. I would imagine that oral temps. are nonexistent in that environment.
