I feel the shame overwhelm me as she says the word rectally. It is worse because I know that eleven year old Cory just had an oral temp and has now heard that I will be getting my temp rectally. I try that logic by saying I just saw Cory get his temp in his mouth why can't I have mine in my mouth. She says she is sorry but my pediatrician told them he wanted my temps taken in my rectum as that is where he takes them when I am at the office. Great now Cory knows that I get rectal temps at the pediatrician, my talking is only causing more shame. The nurse now sits on the bed and says I need you to slide your pants down and turn over on your tummy. I start to cry from the shame of watching a younger boy get an oral temp and now having to get a rectal temp while the younger boy listens. Through the tears I get out a please take it in mouth like you did his. I am so sorry but I have to follow the doctors orders. I continue to cry audibly as I hook my fingers in the waistband of my pajamas and slowly begin there descent down my legs. I slide them all the way to my ankles and through the tears I turn over and present my bare butt to Nurse Fisher. I am crying so hard from the shame as I feel Nurse Fisher's fingers enter my butt crack. She spreads her fingers and my crack is opened for her to see my thirteen year old starburst. She tries to calm me down by saying that it is okay that other kids in the pediatric ward are also getting their temps in their bottom. I still can't shake the feeling though that most of them are younger than me. I cry even louder then as I feel the thermometer penetrate it way inside me. I can not stop thinking as I feel the thermometer slide up inside me that I am sure that the thermometer going in my rectum is a baby thermometer and was created to go in a baby's rectum. Now however it is lodged in my thirteen year old rectum and eleven year old Cory is a witness. Nurse Fisher holds the thermometer in place for five minutes, the same way you would hold a pen. She mentions that should not be upset as getting your temp in your bottom is the most accurate way. I find no solace that me and the babies in the pediatric ward will be the winners of the most accurate temperature award. I can only concentrate on the feeling of the glass rod warming inside my rectum and how humiliating it must look sticking out between my cheeks. Finally the time has passed and Nurse Fisher spreads my cheeks and looks at the thermometer poking from my hole. She announces ten more seconds and she begins counting backwards. Then just as quickly turn over in the bed. I then feel the large amount of lubricant squish between my cheeks and I feel so ashamed of having my butthole covered in vaseline just like a baby or toddler. The nurse pulls the curtain from around the bed as she walks. I look over and Cory is looking like he is watching television but I know what he is thinking. The nurse then goes to the cart at the end of my bed and holds the fresh from my rectum thermometer up to the light. I can see it glisten from the vaseline that now coats almost three quarters of its length. Tears begin to run from my eyes again as I am gripped by the shame of remembering where the glass rod in Nurse Fisher's hand had spent the previous five minutes. The thought that it been placed up my rectum just like a little baby was crushing. I looked at Cory and he too was staring at the glass rod. He was a big boy of eleven and had his temp taken in his mouth. The nurse announces 101 just a little high. She then proceeds to place the object of my shame in a cup of thermometers with the words used rectal on the front. There are about five other thermometers already in the cup and I think those thermometers were up rectums, but not a thirteen year old rectum, no most likely they were used on small children and babies. I was sure I was the biggest baby in the hospital. The nurse pushes the cart out the room and Cory looks at me. I feel the shame still squishing between my cheeks and I know he knows what happened behind the curtain. He attempts to cheer me up by telling that the boy in my bed before me got his temperature taken in his butthole, just like I did. I say really, was he older like me. The shame is crushing as he responds no he was six years old. Four hours pass and it is now 9 pm. A different nurse enters and announces temp and medicine time. I still feel the shame of my five o'clock temp between my butt cheeks and can not believe it is going to happen again, but it is and this time things actually get worse.
