I had jaw surgery when I was 13. I had a few RTs in the hospital but I was so sick I couldn't remember them. My jaw was wired for 6 weeks. I had to go to school during this time. One day around 10, I asked to go to the nurse, I was not feeling well. Since my jaw was wired, the nurse took my temperture rectally. At first, I fussed a little. The nurse explained that she needed to take my temperture, since I did not look well. I finally agreed. I went in a little room and pulled down my pants and underwear and laid waiting. The nurse came in with the thermometer. In it went. Another kid was there and was peeking in with my rear end up with a glass thermometer sticking up in the air. The nurse asked the kid to go down the hall way, I was getting my temperture taken. He asked why was I getting it like that. She said that my jaw was wired. 5 mintues later, she came back and read it. I had a fever of 101.7. She said had to call my mom to come and get me. Problem was, my mom was not available. I laid in the nurse's office shivering for hours. The nurse came back to check on me often and took my temperature again. It was 102.4. At the end of the day, the nurse sent me home with a note to my mom that I had a fever.
I got home and sure enough, my mom was there. She read the note and felt my forehead. She told me to lay down on the couch and that she was getting the thermometer to take my temperature. I knew what was coming. She was concerned that I had a fever and was so sick. She came back with the RT thermometer and asked me to lower my pants and underwear. When it went in, it was ice cold but felt so good. My sister walked in with her friend. My rear end was out there for the world to see with the glass tube in my. They both were staring. My pants were down a little past my knees. I actually was excited that someone was looking. My mom said that my temp was 103.2. She was so upset and hurried to call the doctor. About a half hour later we were off to the doctors.
What happened next? The nurse rushed me in to the examing room and asked me to get on the table and pull my pants down since my jaw was wired. She said she had to get the rectal thermometer. She said that they really don't use it too much. My rear end got a chill. There was a mirron in the room and could see my rear end exposed and my pants down past my knees. I was hot and cold and the same time. She came in the the RT therm. and shook it down. I was so sick but excited at the same time. I could see the thermometer in my rear end looking into the mirror. It was sticking up at a 45 degree angle. I knew I was sick getting an RT in the doctor's office. This would be the forth time in a day. She put some vasoline on the end and asked me to hold still. She said that since I has such a fever, she had to take my temp. It felt so good going in. Cool and smooth. I loved the feeling of having it in me. About a minute later, it fell out. The nurse asked me to hold still and not to move. She put it back in and held it for 5 minutes. She pulled it out and said, Oh my, your temp is 103.4. She called the doctor in and he examined me. I had pneumonia. He had my mom take me to the emergency room. Off we went.
At the ER, there is not much privacy. They took me in a little room and took my vitals but realized that they had to take my temp rectally. I had to walk into another room down the hall. This time I got a blanket, but I still had to pull my pants and underwear down (5th time in a day). I really nice nurse came in and tried to make me comfortable even though I was getting my temp taken rectally. She was so kind. She shook the thermometer down and explained everything that was going to happen. She talked to me when the thermo. went in. It felt so good I got excited. Cool and smooth. The nurse walked away for a few minutes. I turned around to look. There it was, at a 45 degree angle. The 6th time that day. About 4 mintues the nurse came back and pulled the thermometer out. She made an concerned noise and said, you definitely have a high fever. She tried to comfort me as best as possible and went off to get the doctor. I was admitted to the hospital and stayed there for a week and a half. I had at least 5 RTs a day, every 5 hours or so. Often, the door was open in my room, sometimes the curtain did not get closed all the way. There were people in the hallway who saw my rear end with the thermometer stick up in it. I loved watching the nurses shake down the thermometer. I knew it was coming. They asked me to take my panties down and lay on my tummy and said they were going to take my temperature. They put one hand on my rear end and pulled it apart and used the other to put it in. I loved when it went in and was in me. I could feel the cool glass tube. A few times the nurses would put it in and by accident, moved it around. They were so concerned the first week. Sometimes they would come back sooner to take my temperature since I had a high fever that did not go down. It stayed between 103.4 and 103.8. I will never forget that time. My rear end had that thermometer in it so much that it missed it when it was over.

How old are you now? Must have been some time back, I'd think, as most hospitals today, when taking rectal readings probably do so with electronic units that have red topped rectal probes. I had a hospital experience way back in the 60s when I was admitted for a few days. From the moment I walked in for admitting, I got more thermometers stuck up my behind than I think I ever had totally growing up. I was 10 then. Like you, I watched as the drawer was opened, I was told to turn over, my underpants lowered, the thermometer removed from the drawer and its case, shaken down, lubricated and then with my cheeks spread, got it pushed into my rectum for three minutes. And it's funny you mention not fully drawn curtains. Had a similar experience during that time as I noticed the Asian girl, probably 13 or 13, somewhat older than me, in the next room getting her ward admission temperature taken rectally with her white panties and pink pajama bottoms lowered, and the glass thermometer proudly sticking up between her cute butt cheeks while her Mom & dad looked on. If the curtain on her side of the glass partition between rooms had been drawn, I'd have not witnessed that. It wasn't long after that the every four hour check, found me face down, bottom bared, underpants lowered with a thermometer firmly up my behind.
Thanks for your story Tina.

Correction: That coment regarding the girl's age should read, "...probably 12 or 13, somewhat older than me..."

It was in the 80's. I am in my 40's now. I really did not want to have my temperature take that way, but my jaw was wired for 6 weeks. I remember my family eating pizza and wings right in front of me. When I was in the nurses office in school, I wanted my temperature taken in my mouth like the other kids, but that was not an option. They did the surgery to correct the alignment of my jaw. They took my temperature in my rear end when I was in the hospital then, I was in so much pain, I didn't care what they did. I remember I was laying on my side at the time. I did not have underwear on. That was my mom's idea.
My mom took my temperature in my rear end when was not feeling well often. It did not matter how old I was. I remember one day she woke me up on a weekend. She said I did not look well. She said I look sick and felt my forehead. She said that she thinks I have a fever. She told me to stay in bed and she would get the thermometer and take my temperature. A few minutes later, she was shaking it down and puting vasoline on the end. She pulled the blankets away and ask me to roll over and pull down my PJ's. I did not pull them down far enough so she pulled them down to the kneens. My dresser had a mirror on it and I could see everything. She asked me to lift my bottom up a bit to put the thermometer in. It was cold but it felt good. I felt terrible but the thermometer made me feel good. My sister was there watching the whole thing. She was teasing me and said she was going to take a picture. I could felt the glass thermometer in me. The phone rang and my mom left the room. My sister was talking to me (cant remember what she said) but she kept looking at my bottom with the thermometer in me. My mom was going for a good 10 mintues. My rear end exposed for that long. I did not dare take it out. I could see the glass tube in me in the mirror. My mom finally came back and pulled it out. She stood there for a mintue looking at the thermomter. She said I had a fever and I was told to stay in bed. I ended up having the flu and had my temperature taken several times a day. She did take me to the doctor. He told her to take my temperature several times a day and give me lots of liquids. She woke me up often and said it was time to take my temperature. down my PJ's went and panties too. She kept the thermometer on my dresser with the vasoline. I was begining to think that the thermometer was permanently in my rear end. My mom would not tell me what was, so after she left the room, I read the therm. I had a temp of 102 to 103 for about a week or so. She made such a fuss that I was sick. I could hear her one the phone calling the Dr. and some of her friends and telling them of my fever. She even told them that she took it rectally. Now everyone knew. My sister ended up having her friend over. About a half an hour later, my mom came in to take my temperature. They were peaking in to watch. My mom told the to go down stairs and watch some tv but they stood their asking my mom questions about why I needed to have my temperature taken in my rear end. My mom explained that I was sick and that was the way it is done. The thermometer was sticking out of me and my rear end was there for them to look at. They kept watching even when my mom read it. Every time she took it out she shook her head and made a concerned noise. She put it back in the case and put it on the dresser. I will never forget it. Over the course of a week, I had that thermometer in me about 30-35 times. I cant remember when I was a kid having oral temps. It was just an accepted thing that my mom did.

Hi Tina,

Thank you for sharing your story in detail!

Did you always have your temperatures taken rectally, or just while you had your jaw wired? Up to what age did you get all of your temperatures rectally?

Is your sister younger or older and by how much?

Did she also get her temperatures rectally at all?

Thanks,

Brian

Hello Tina, thanks for posting your memory. I grew up during the same time frame, and rectal temps were alive and well in my area. I got my RT taken at home all throughout childhood, and at the doctor's until 12. Glass thermometers were the norm, and the doctor's offices and school nurses would have large glass jars filled with red and blue thermometers. At home, mom had a small case with the thermometer.

I was wondering if you remember differences in how they held it in or how they wiped you, having all those temps taken at the same time. When I had to go through having several RTs taken around the same time, the differences stood out in my mind. Mom and family always wiped the vaseline, while most nurses didn't...which left me with a greasy bottom. One hospital used waxy wipes to wipe me. Mom usually laid her hand across my bottom the entire time, holding the thermometer at the same time. The nurses always held it by the tip. No one ever just left it in. All of my RTs were taken with me laying on my tummy. Being a boy, I think it was less revealing that way.

Your experience almost makes me wish I'd been hospitalized at that age! The thought of having my temperature taken rectally every few hours for several days would have been enough for me to be the first one ready at temp time, every time!

I've been hospitalized exactly twice in my life. The first time was for eight days when I came down with Asiatic flu at the age of 2 1/2. Although I have no doubt that my temperature was in fact taken rectally, I have no recollection of that. The other time was when I had my wisdom teeth surgically removed at the age of 19. No rectal temps then, althogh I was given a thermometer to use which was marked as an oral, but had a blunt bulb. I was allowed to keep it when I was released and I still have it.

I think I would have felt the same way Tina did if I'd had the same experience in that I would have missed having a thermometer in my rectum as well.

I agree Steve, that would be a dream to have 6 temps taken in one day.
