I had jaw surgery when I was 13. I had a few RTs in the hospital but I was so sick I couldn't remember them. My jaw was wired for 6 weeks. I had to go to school during this time. One day around 10, I asked to go to the nurse, I was not feeling well. Since my jaw was wired, the nurse took my temperture rectally. At first, I fussed a little. The nurse explained that she needed to take my temperture, since I did not look well. I finally agreed. I went in a little room and pulled down my pants and underwear and laid waiting. The nurse came in with the thermometer. In it went. Another kid was there and was peeking in with my rear end up with a glass thermometer sticking up in the air. The nurse asked the kid to go down the hall way, I was getting my temperture taken. He asked why was I getting it like that. She said that my jaw was wired. 5 mintues later, she came back and read it. I had a fever of 101.7. She said had to call my mom to come and get me. Problem was, my mom was not available. I laid in the nurse's office shivering for hours. The nurse came back to check on me often and took my temperature again. It was 102.4. At the end of the day, the nurse sent me home with a note to my mom that I had a fever.
I got home and sure enough, my mom was there. She read the note and felt my forehead. She told me to lay down on the couch and that she was getting the thermometer to take my temperature. I knew what was coming. She was concerned that I had a fever and was so sick. She came back with the RT thermometer and asked me to lower my pants and underwear. When it went in, it was ice cold but felt so good. My sister walked in with her friend. My rear end was out there for the world to see with the glass tube in my. They both were staring. My pants were down a little past my knees. I actually was excited that someone was looking. My mom said that my temp was 103.2. She was so upset and hurried to call the doctor. About a half hour later we were off to the doctors.
What happened next? The nurse rushed me in to the examing room and asked me to get on the table and pull my pants down since my jaw was wired. She said she had to get the rectal thermometer. She said that they really don't use it too much. My rear end got a chill. There was a mirron in the room and could see my rear end exposed and my pants down past my knees. I was hot and cold and the same time. She came in the the RT therm. and shook it down. I was so sick but excited at the same time. I could see the thermometer in my rear end looking into the mirror. It was sticking up at a 45 degree angle. I knew I was sick getting an RT in the doctor's office. This would be the forth time in a day. She put some vasoline on the end and asked me to hold still. She said that since I has such a fever, she had to take my temp. It felt so good going in. Cool and smooth. I loved the feeling of having it in me. About a minute later, it fell out. The nurse asked me to hold still and not to move. She put it back in and held it for 5 minutes. She pulled it out and said, Oh my, your temp is 103.4. She called the doctor in and he examined me. I had pneumonia. He had my mom take me to the emergency room. Off we went.
At the ER, there is not much privacy. They took me in a little room and took my vitals but realized that they had to take my temp rectally. I had to walk into another room down the hall. This time I got a blanket, but I still had to pull my pants and underwear down (5th time in a day). I really nice nurse came in and tried to make me comfortable even though I was getting my temp taken rectally. She was so kind. She shook the thermometer down and explained everything that was going to happen. She talked to me when the thermo. went in. It felt so good I got excited. Cool and smooth. The nurse walked away for a few minutes. I turned around to look. There it was, at a 45 degree angle. The 6th time that day. About 4 mintues the nurse came back and pulled the thermometer out. She made an concerned noise and said, you definitely have a high fever. She tried to comfort me as best as possible and went off to get the doctor. I was admitted to the hospital and stayed there for a week and a half. I had at least 5 RTs a day, every 5 hours or so. Often, the door was open in my room, sometimes the curtain did not get closed all the way. There were people in the hallway who saw my rear end with the thermometer stick up in it. I loved watching the nurses shake down the thermometer. I knew it was coming. They asked me to take my panties down and lay on my tummy and said they were going to take my temperature. They put one hand on my rear end and pulled it apart and used the other to put it in. I loved when it went in and was in me. I could feel the cool glass tube. A few times the nurses would put it in and by accident, moved it around. They were so concerned the first week. Sometimes they would come back sooner to take my temperature since I had a high fever that did not go down. It stayed between 103.4 and 103.8. I will never forget that time. My rear end had that thermometer in it so much that it missed it when it was over.
