Hello Tina, thanks for posting your memory. I grew up during the same time frame, and rectal temps were alive and well in my area. I got my RT taken at home all throughout childhood, and at the doctor's until 12. Glass thermometers were the norm, and the doctor's offices and school nurses would have large glass jars filled with red and blue thermometers. At home, mom had a small case with the thermometer.
I was wondering if you remember differences in how they held it in or how they wiped you, having all those temps taken at the same time. When I had to go through having several RTs taken around the same time, the differences stood out in my mind. Mom and family always wiped the vaseline, while most nurses didn't...which left me with a greasy bottom. One hospital used waxy wipes to wipe me. Mom usually laid her hand across my bottom the entire time, holding the thermometer at the same time. The nurses always held it by the tip. No one ever just left it in. All of my RTs were taken with me laying on my tummy. Being a boy, I think it was less revealing that way.
