When I'm sick with a bad cold or flu, I prefer having my temperature taken rectally, and that's the method my wife routinely uses when any of my family get sick. The advantage, besides being the most accurate method, is you don't have to worry about holding back a cough or sneeze while the thermometer's in your mouth. There's also a minimal interruption of sleep versus the oral method. Other than a little discomfort when the thermometer goes in, you can drift right back to sleep if the coughing don't keep you up. I use to get so embarrassed when my wife first started taking my rectal temperature, but now that it's happened a few times I no longer mind it. She's a nurse, and I figure she knows what's best.
