When I'm sick with a bad cold or flu, I prefer having my temperature taken rectally, and that's the method my wife routinely uses when any of my family get sick. The advantage, besides being the most accurate method, is you don't have to worry about holding back a cough or sneeze while the thermometer's in your mouth. There's also a minimal interruption of sleep versus the oral method. Other than a little discomfort when the thermometer goes in, you can drift right back to sleep if the coughing don't keep you up. I use to get so embarrassed when my wife first started taking my rectal temperature, but now that it's happened a few times I no longer mind it. She's a nurse, and I figure she knows what's best.

there should never be any discomfort during a rectal temp., at least for most adults. I can understand that it might occur if they are small, but other than that, the anus is much larger than it would be for a child.

A child can hold a rectal thermometer in his/her rectim with NO discomfort whatsoever. It is all in how it is presented and done. A nice soft massage on the legs and back before it is inserted will do wonders. Then after it is in the rectum,,the massage continues and soothing talk.befor they know it,,the 3 minutes (glass) or the beep on the digital goes off and it's done. I have witnessed a parent giving her son a cool enema very slowly on her bed to bring down a fever while massaging his legs and bottom, the 5 year old was laying there very calmly with the rectal tube in him,,and the bag very very slowly going into him with just enough cool water to not start the urge to go to the toilet. She knew how to give a soothing enema,,and her little boy knew he had nothing to fear by the way he handled it. I wish I could have known her a lot longer too. She had a lot of class.

Because of the accuracy of the RT- the RT is ok for infants, toddlers, kids(teens included)and adults of ALL AGES! So yes, an RT is still ok for a fever, stuffy head/nose etc.
