While I was in the hospital for my tonsils, I had to have my temp checked a few times a day. The room I was in had 3 beds and no curtains. The nurses would roll in a cart with a jar of red thermometers, vaseline, alcohol, and a small box of waxy wipes they used to wipe our bottoms. You were pretty much already bared in a hospital gown, unless you laid on your back and didn't move at all. Most nurses did us one by one, they would flip the covers down, and have us roll over on our tummies. I would try to be on my tummy when the covers got turned down so I wasn't showing everything. The nurses would flip our gowns down if they were in the way, but most of the time my gown was bunched up and not covering my bottom at all. Of course, all eyes would be on me during my turn, so I felt very vulnerable. The boy next to me was much younger and always stared during my turn.
There was one nurse who would have us all roll over and flip all of our sheets down, and part our gowns at the same time. Since I was closest to the door, I got my sheets turned down first, but I would be the last one to get my temp., so I would have to lay there bare bottom and patiently wait my turn.
When my turn came, I can remember when the nurse spreading my bottom and inserting the cold thermometer while my roommates watched on. They had these strange waxy papers they would wipe our bottoms with at the end, which was probably the worse part. Having your bottom wiped felt very childish.
The worst part of the whole stay was going to the bathroom, though. The "boys room" was down the hall, and it was two low toilets with no stalls. This was in the 70s, and this set up was common back then. Other boys seemed to have no problem going with someone else there, but I couldnt go with other boys coming and going. So I waited until night, only to find out I had to be "taken" after bedtime, which meant the nurse came in with me.
