I can remember earlier times when we had the same thing hey used portable screens that didn't always provide much privacy.
We were allowed to put our pyjama tops on after our operations but had to wear a kind of diaper that tied at the sides. This made it easier for the nurses as they would have us turn on our tummies and just undo the ties to bare our bottoms. The toilets were like you describe except ours had low height dividers but any adult or older teen walking past could see over it was like that so the nurses could see what was going on and rescue anyone that became ill on the toilet.
I think we all got used to others seeing us with bare bottoms getting temps taken or enemas or injections besides which we didn't have much choice in the matter.

I was 7, and I'm not sure how old the others were. One boy got released and another came in during my recovery, and the boy next to me was much younger in my 7 year old mind, so probably 5 or so. Back in those days, they also had visitting hours, even for the children's ward, so parents would only be there in the evenings around dinner time.

As for the bathroom, this set up was very common back then. Schools never had doors on boy's room stalls, so my solution was to never go to the bathroom at school. At the hospital for that long, though, I had no choice. When the nurse took me, she literally stood there and watched me try to go, as I fumbled around with holding up the hospital gown. I finally sat down, and when that didn't work, I told her I couldnt go with her watching, and she stepped outside.
