I was 7, and I'm not sure how old the others were. One boy got released and another came in during my recovery, and the boy next to me was much younger in my 7 year old mind, so probably 5 or so. Back in those days, they also had visitting hours, even for the children's ward, so parents would only be there in the evenings around dinner time.
As for the bathroom, this set up was very common back then. Schools never had doors on boy's room stalls, so my solution was to never go to the bathroom at school. At the hospital for that long, though, I had no choice. When the nurse took me, she literally stood there and watched me try to go, as I fumbled around with holding up the hospital gown. I finally sat down, and when that didn't work, I told her I couldnt go with her watching, and she stepped outside.
