Here is the part I did not see answered in this thread. Of course, a stuffy nose makes an oral temperature impossible. But did that mean that your mother did nothing to relieve your congestion before taking your rectal temperature? Today cold pills have decongestents, but they are only marginally helpful if you are really stuffy. When I was in grade school and had a cold, a rectal temperature taking was standard, but first I was given nose drops to make me comfortable before any other meds or procedures were done. Is that no longer true with you or your children? Especially at bedtime, you want to do a temperature taking, but unstuffing a child's nose would make it easier for him to lie still with the thermometer in his bottom and easier for him to fall asleep after that. What do you do for a stuffy nose today? What was done when you were young enough to have your temperature taken rectally?
