According to a Wiki article, they date back to at least the 18th century.

An English doctor invented the thermometer as we know it 4 to 5 inches long pencil shaped with the rectal type bulb in 1865 the oral type bulb didn't really show it self till world war 1 you can make what you will on this fact. Before the 1865 model most doctors used french version that was shaped like a crescent and was over foot long and only used under the arm and had to be read in place as it didn't have little bump in the glass the 1865 model does. I believe the English doctors name was Smith

I believe that thermometers were commercially manufactured in NY, NJ, and other states around the late 19th century, when the introduction of new techniques streamlined the process. If you have an old BD, Taylor, or other brand thermometer, the inscription on the box says "since 1897," or something similar. The question that I have is whether rectal was the only means of temperature taking in the U.S., until oral thermometers were available, and if so, for how many years. I don't know if this info. is readily available, or even possible to find.
