Some kids giggled about it, but all admitted that it was how their temperature was taken until about first grade or later. If the boys played "house" with the girls, the doctor or nurse kit was there or we improvised to take care of baby. When it was time to take its temperature, sometimes an oral method was used, but all of us knew babies had their temperatures taken rectally. Sometimes we just put the thermometer up against the dolly's behind and acted out what our parents did to us. As for liking it, everyone pretended to be glad when it ended, but no one forgot about having the experience. What other kids did was impossible to tell, but I would bet that they took their own rectal temperature in a few cases because they acquired this fetish. The fact that when curiosity about sex showed up in sixth grade or later, some would want to "play doctor," was proof of the lasting quality of sexuality that had its roots in normal childhood experiences.
