 i take my temp rectally because it is most accurate. the nurse at my doctors office takes my temp orally. how can i get the nurse to take my temp rectally? and asking her is out of the question because i am to shy, so how else can i get her to take my temp rectally? and if she took my temp rectally would that in return show my mom that that way is most accurate, and also would it make my mom want to take my temp that way? the reason i am asking is because most of the time when i go to the doctors it is because i am sick. and most times i have a bad stuffy nose and i think that taking my temp rectally is not only better in that case but also more accurate.

Tell the doctor and tell your mother that you have a stuffy nose, and because you cannot breathe through your nose, it is not possible to close your mouth around and oral thermometer or probe. They will likely suggest using your armpit or ear, and you can argue about accuracy at that point.

My mother would have used a simple fix for that and given me nose drops first, but you can deal with your congestion in your own way.

Why, Mandy, do you write without capitalization or adequate punctuation? What is your age and education level? Based on the words you use, you should be able to write a proper sentence. It would make you seem more credible if you did.

Mandy first of all, no clinic anywhere is going to take your rectal temp, especially if you are old enough to post on this forum. You could ask the nurse to do it, but she would refuse because clinic policies will not allow it. Second, you could ask your Mom. But if she has already been taking your temp orally, its doubtful if she will agree to take it rectally, regardless of the accuracy issue. In any case, all you can do is ask, and you might get lucky. But chances are you will be turned down. Unfortunately, rectal temps are taboo with most people today, and you will not easily find someone to take yours, regardless of how badly you want it.

Mandy, some good points were made by Amy. Also, requesting a rectal temp. from a parent, nurse, etc., might make you appear to have some serious sexual issues in their eyes. You might be perfectly innocent, but you're setting yourself up for a potentially bad situation. Take your temp. by yourself, if you prefer it that way. You'll avoid problems, and everyone will be happy.Good luck.

I disagree with some of the comments, as a request for a rectal temperature, first does not signal having a serious sexual issue. Next, to say that "no clinic anywhere" is going to take your rectal temp" is not necessarily true.(unless you know this without a doubt and have been to "every" clinic). I speak from experience. I do agree that rectal temperature takings are, well I wouldn't call them taboo, but with the current types of thermommeters and diagnostic items (non invasiove-such as a temporal scanner), are far less common than in the past.
What I stated, I believe in, but I will say this-Mandy's post is at best, questionable.

The Memorial Hospital reply is idiotic to say the least. The person who posted this, first off, does not have the ability to communicate very well in the written word. What is "queer"? The remark about AIDs is also ridiculous.
Last item: Why is it that "His" rectal temperature is addressed as opposed to Her rectal temperature. Both male and females get RTs.

Hi Mandy---I agree with Rich-inform the nurse you are coughing and have a stuffy nose-and you cannot hold the oral thermometer in your mouth-ask the nurse if she will perform the rt on you-tell her that you will not be embarassed-and that your mom take's your temp at home that way-I think the nurse will allow the rt at this point-especially if you are still willing to go through with the process when she tell's you to loosen and lower your pant's-and to lay face down on your tummy on the exam table-or maybe she will have you lay on your side-let her know that you are comfortable with either position-and when she take's your rt-enjoy the moment-it might be your last in a medical setting-unless you find another dr/clinic that is willing to proceed with the session-I have confided with my all 4 of my sister's in allowing them to take my rt-as the only male child I am alway's the patient in our rt game's--communication is the key-you have to let them know that you will go through the entire process-do not back out and get cold feet-when the nurse agree's to the procedure-Good Luck and keep us posted on the event.

I can't get over all the posts about middle-aged people looking to get their temperature taken rectally at the doctor's office. In most offices, they will probably call the pych ward to commit you, because it is just plain weird for an adult to ask for this. Also, something else to think about: you, as the patient may think it is arousing to have this done, but for the nurse it would probably be disgusting to have to do this for an out of shape 40 or 50 something person. Not a pretty picture.

Phil, you make some good points. Most clinic personnel would look at you as if you had three heads if you were to ask for a rectal temp. And then they'd say "No". But this forum is, by and large, a place for posting fantasies about rectal temps. Any posts you find here, including this post, should be read with this in mind.

My experiences have been that the majority of times, a request for a rectal reading was honored, as an adult. In those instances where a RT requested, was not done was because the person doing the vitals either was instructed or chose not to take a RT. Another time or two, the lack of facility space or lack of a place to be laid down was the reason. And in closing, two points. 1st: I was never told or had it insinuated to me that my request was "queer", I was strange, or anything that would suggest a "psyche" concern. 2nd: Many of the caregivers who took my rectal temperature did so and stated that it was the best way for a reading to be taken and openly recommended that it be used whenever possible.
We all have a position on this post, and that's the good thing about the RTMB.

Anyone can make a claim here. For all we know, you were in a room full of beautiful female ghosts of nurses from the 1800's who more than felt obliged to indulge your rt requests. I have an imagination too, just like yours.

The only way you would even remotely stand a chance of getting your rectal temperature taken in a conventional medical setting would be in a hospital under certain conditions.

1. Heat Stroke

2. Unconscious or unable to hold a thermometer orally

3. Inflammation of the mouth, neck, or face (which could
render oral, ear, or temporal readings inaccurate)

4. A rectal reading required for the express purpose of
getting a true "core body" temperature.

Though not common, rectal temperatures are taken when necessary, but not at the request of the patient.

Everything that Caleb describes makes sense. I would be hard-pressed to believe that a rectal temp. would be given if requested by the patient, and doubtfully by the attending nurse. I could imagine that if you spend enough time working in hospital or medical office, that you will come across the occasional weirdos asking to have their fetish wish list fulfilled. Hopefully the staff will just ignore them.

I stumbled across this thread while looking through the archives the other night. This is something I ponder myself too. Having my temperature taken rectally at the doctors office is something that I would very much like to experience.But like many who have commented, I agree that it is highely unlikely and most nurses and doctors would be very suprised at this request.

However it is not impossible and in some cases rectal temperatures are taken regardless of age. I am no medical expert but there is certain circumstances when rectal temps are required, usually either to get a basel temp or in serious cases where a very accurate reading is needed.I do not think requsting a rectal temp would place anyone in the sexual issue bracket or portray them as weird. RT's are most accurate after all.

In saying that I have thought of ways to get a RT done also. The stuffed nose trick is good but I could not see it working. My idea, which I have yet to try (and probably never will) is either to allow her to take my temperature orally, then il say, It was a degree higher earlier. The reply would most likely be , well your improving then. To which il reply , its probably because I take my temperature rectally. This could prompt her to try rectal reading to make sure or at least let her know thats how I do it for future. The other idea I have is over the years I have got to know my doctor's routine. My doctor follows the same routine all the time.For example if one had a sore throat, their glands and tonsils would be examined, followed by ears next would be the breathing and pulse followed by a oral temperature. The thermometers are at the other end of the room so when the temperature part comes about she'll walk over to them. Il start lowering my pants. When she turns around the question will no doubt be what are you doing.Il say I take mine rectally or I thought it would be rectally. Based on the next reponse i'd either abort mission or keep going.

I wouldn't go there in a doctor's office at all, unless you are seriously into humiliation (and not the kind you are looking for).

I do know that a lot of ER's do an internal bleeding check as part of the admission, in which they finger you. I know because I've taken my girlfriend and later wife in and they did that to her. I also heard the gentleman in the next cubicle getting it done, so it's apparently pretty routine.

That's about as close as you're gonna get without being looked at like some kind of pervert. The ER is usually a lot less concerned with patient modesty (like not at all) compared to doctor's offices in which they are usually very careful (they are trying to keep patients, and most patients dislike invasive procedures of any kind). The ER, on the other hand, gives you a backless gown and curtains that never close.

But it's really best to find a consenting partner to "play" nurse or mom, and try to keep it within the confines of your personal life.

You could try drinking a soda or other cold beverage right up to the point the nurse has to take your temperature
