For me, as a kid, rectal temps hurt probably because lube was never used. Now as an adult, age 43, the glass thermometer feels good going in and it also felt good going in when I took them as a teenager and when I was in my 20's, and 30's. my mom stopped taking my rectal temps when I was 5, so I got all oral at home after that, and I only received one rectal temp at the doctors at age 13, although that one was felt a little more. I think the key is to gently insert the thermometer in your butt and it won't hurt as much. As far as a lube, only use a lube if your rectal area is completely dry. If your rectal area is sweaty then that serves as a natural lube and KY or Vaseline is not necessary. So try inserting the thermometer without lube and if you have any resistence to it going far enough in, then take it out and use the lube.
BTW- To get the optimal feeling a glass rectal thermometer is best, but if you have to use a digital thermometer, try a BD Flex Tip thermometer as that feels almost as good as a glass one. Do not use Geratherm ones as they don't go as far in and they don't feel as good.
