Last wekend I came home feeling poorly. I felt like I had the flu, with accompanying aches, pains, chills and most certainly a fever. I called my friend who's a nurse from the Phillipines , and asked her to stop by over check me. The first thing she did was take my temperature rectally. It was up to 102F. Well, for almost a week, my temperature always taken rectally(with a glass-mercury rectal thermometer by my friend except when I saw my MD), "rollercoasted", you might say, the lowest being 100.2F, the highest being 102.8F. I had taken various OTC meds to reduce the fever which persisted pretty much on and off considering the readings. And it was during the times where I "felt cool" as though my temperature was back to normal for me (99.8F (R)) That I found ,regardless of how I "felt", my temperature would be an accurate measure of my infection and core temperature. A few times when I felt OK as mentioned above, I was extremely surprised when the readings taken, read anywhere from 101F to 102.3F. I am glad that my temperature was taken rectally during this illness which I'm now on anti-biotics for, and still getting periodic rectal temperature readings taken from my friend.
During my doctor visit my temp was done orally with an electronic probe. I registered 98.6F. I got back home, asked my friend to check my temperature, which she did, and it was up to 101F. Therefore, I am convinced, that the best way for a temperature to be measured, is rectally. The reason for my illnesss was a pretty fast moving bacterial infection.
