 Surprise in public

yesterday I had a nice tour with 3 friends and our bicycles. Wonderful weather, and a lot of fun. At the end we had a BBQ just next to a lake. We were not the only ones, a lot of couples and young families.

Not far away from us, there was a young family of 5 with a little baby, a boy of about 3 and another boy of about 5-6. While chatting, I was sometimes looking to them, as I was sitting in this direction. Daddy and oldest boy were playing football. And the middle boy was just playing around. While the baby was sleeping.
After a time of intensive chatting with my friends, I watched again and was totally surprised. The middle boy was laying at her Moms lap and she just pushed the thermometer in his butt. In full public?! I was a little shocked. First I did not believe it, I thought, I look wrong or it is just imagination (because I sometimes read here) ... but it was reality. After inserting she covered him with a little blanket, so it was not that obvious anymore. After a while she uncovered his butt again, took off and read the temperature, and send her son back to play. Just like nothing happened ...

In the US or other countries the Police would have been called immediatelly, I guess. But it seems that here they dont care ...

It was common in military service clinics to take rectal temperatures in an area of the waiting room. Kids were treated like objects in an assembly line. Age did not matter. Usually there was a table reserved for a kid getting his temperature taken rectally while chairs were placed facing the examination table where kids would get oral temperatures at the same time.

Generally, rectal temps stopped after age 5 but there were some that had to continue or start at a later age. My mom took me to the clinic if I so much as sneezed and so sitting in a chair I got to see lots of rectal temps. I keep thinking of the 7 to 10 year old kids lying on their tummies with their pants and underwear pulled down to their knees. There were complaints and demands to know why they could not have their temperature taken in their mouth like their contemporaries. Most of the time it was because of their lack of intellect, some for drinking a beverage beforehand, a couple that got it taken rectally at home for tampering with a thermometer while taken orally. In any case, they were all overcome by embarrassment.

The thread creator wrote that it happened yesterday (!) in Swissland (!) in public near the lake (!)

I might have been surprised but would have watched it with big interest too. This young mother had a reason. And I appreciate her concerns and care. in public or privacy

"military service clinics" refer to clinics that service dependents of U.S. military service members, such as Army, Navy (including Marines), and Air Force. The purpose of the message was to give a historical perspective of rectal temperatures taken in plain view of strangers.

If you don't get it, it is probably you are not familiar with a culture that existed in the United States fifty years ago when children were thought of and treated as objects.

Well, just to stir the pot.

Telling a lie may be legal (even if unethical)

Taking a rectal temp in public may be illegal in certain circumstances.

If the story told is true (and while unlikely, I myself have been surprised at some of the things seen in public) it doesn't sound like it crosses the line into illegality.

If the story told is a lie, there is nothing illegal about it, because there has been no intent to defraud nor has there been a contract violation.

We all read these stories with a grain of salt. While I myself have to admit, that while I share stories that are essentially true, I have caught myself exaggerating and embellishing it a little. Truth is stranger than fiction, you just really never know.

Why is a rectal temperature the best way to take a lawyers temperature?

Because they were made perfect a$$holes.

The laws in each country is different and in the United States each state law is different. I believe that for a child up to the age of five the worst that could happen in the U.S. is that Child Protective Services would be called in to investigate. That being said it is unlikely that anything would be done about it because to date, there are no laws against a parent taking a child's temperature rectally. The problem would be exposing a child's rear end in public to do so. I doubt seriously if CPS would be called in if a diaper would be changed in public and a rectal temp is not that far off base, especially if it were taken in area thought to be safe from people traveling in the area.

That being said, why would taking a child's temperature rectally in public so important that it could not wait until they return home?
