I can recall reading my mother's 1962 copy of "Dr.Spock's Baby and child care" book. The chapter on "fever" had a good drawing of a baby over his mother's lap, with a startled look in his face and the rectal thermometer being held between his mothers fingers as it sticks straight up from between the buttocks.I memorized the text and always enjoyed other "Textbooks " on the subject which had photos and illustrations. In those days it was recommended that "Temperature should be taken by rectum,to age 5 or 6."That advice was followed with my sister and I, and I had several friends whose mother continued rectal temps to age 10 or twelve.
