Back in the day when I had my temp taken at the Dr. office, it felt like they left it in forever. Does anyone know what the policy was back in the 80's for how long the thermometer was left in a kids butt?

3 to 5 minutes is listed in most medical books from the golden age of glass thermometers.

Very True and I can recall a time or two when mom left one in me for much longer I know mom left me for 20 minutes once when she answered the phone.
I also recall a time at the doctor's when the nurse was busy and left one in my butt so long mom finally removed it after about 15 minutes.

Oh wow 20 mins? Did it get numb or did you feel it the entire time? I can remember a few times it feeling like it was left in longer cause of phone calls or distractions, but never THAT long. I mean even in that time you could feel it, so it'd be strange to feel it in for so long.

I was 8 or 9 years old and don't recall if I could still feel it in me or not.

Ken, I am guilty of doing the same thing! Got distracted phone door etc. Was not till i heard DAD I think it's time that I would realize i forgot my kid was in bed with the thermometer still in him. That happened on several occasions!

3-5 mins is usually the normal time required. In the case of a digital thermometer until it beeps, usually after 30 seconds.

Usually 3-5 minutes is the usual time. I have heard of people claiming that it was left in their butt for almost an hour. I guess that the temp taker didn't care much about the patient.

My Mom used a kitchen timer and set it at 4 minutes. My Dad just timed it on his watch and always left it 5 minutes.

Wait 3 minutes after entry, remove and clean thermometer, read it, document. Reinsert it and wait another 2 mintute. Document final reading.
