A lot has been said about rectal temperature comfort. There is no real physical discomfort felt when getting a rectal temperature, provided that it is taken properly. However, there may be a psychological discomfort, particularly when it is taken against a patient's wishes. For example, an eight year old boy may not feel comfortable (and feel embarrassed) about getting his temperature taken rectally while seeing his seven year old brother and ten year old sister have their temperatures taken orally and having just seen his five year old brother also having his temperature taken orally due to his age.

It shouldn't hurt or cause physical discomfort if there is a fair amount of lubricant used and the person actually inserting the thermometer, has first explained the procedure, knowing it will be your first time as well as inserting the thermometer gently, slowly and at a proper angle. Good luck.
