 At home was your temp taken lying face down with the thermometer inserted and you were uncovered or on your side with knees bent and uncovered. Or after insertion were you covered until the thermometer was removed. How many had the thermometer held in place for the entire time of insertion. Would you have preferred a different procedure

At home my temp was taken with me lying face down with the thermometer inserted. I was uncovered the entire time and I remained on my stomach. I knew no other position, as this was also the way it was done at the pediatrician's office. I do not think I would have preferred any other position. A few times it was held in place but not usually.

Its funny, Im a big fan of rectal temperature taking however I can not recall any experiences which involved a nurse, doctor or my mother taking my temperature rectally. I consider myself quite unfortunate in this regard. Even though lying face down on your tummy is probably the most common procedure used.

At age 13, I was in the hospital for 3 weeks with rheumatic fever. Since I was in the pediatric ward, temps were all taken rectally. The nurse would have you turn onto your side and the lubricated thermomter would be inserted. Then the covers were put back over you. As embarassing as these temps were, I never considered refusing the rectal temp and insisting on oral ones. Wonder what would have happened?

If I was in the bathroom, I laid across a lap, usually naked. If I was in bed, I laid on my tummy and was bare for the duration. Mom and dad rarely held the thermometer, Grandma always did. Grandma also kept me in bed naked from the waist down, in part to keep me in bed and also to make further temperature checks easier.

At the doctor's office, we went over (grand)parent/aunt/uncle/cousin's lap or bent over the side of the exam table for RTs - our choice. Also, were I grew up, it was usual for us to undress completely once in the exam room, so we were naked. (When my parents, sister and I moved to a city, the nurse and doctor were quite surprised to find my sister and I naked. After our mom explained why, they said that was not how things were done there.)

At home, those of us old enough to dress ourselves were expected to bare our own bottoms for RTs, though we were often naked around the house, anyway, so seeing each other naked was normal for us (me, my sister and our cousins).

No. Nor my sister nor any of my cousins that I can recall. It was that way as far back as I can remember. Nudity was common among the adults as well, at least in the evenings. My family is down-to-earth and nature oriented (but not Luddites - we love technology).

I was made to lay on my stomach and my mom would have me "lift up a little" as she pulled my underwear down to the backs of my knees. The Vaseline covered thermometer was then inserted up into my rectum for about 5 minutes. No less than 1 half of the thermometer was always inserted. She held the thermometer between her fingers, while resting her hand on my bottom the entire time. If I attempted to squeeze or push the thermometer out, my cheeks were held open for the duration of the temperature taking.

I don't remember ever having it taken in any position other than on my tummy. Memories before age 6 are pretty hazy, so if it was ever different before then, I don't remember. At the doctor's office, the nurse always held the thermometer in place the entire time, and I was never covered up during any part of having a temp taken, underwear was down at knees. At home was pretty much exactly the same. I knew nothing else, the whole procedure was pretty much the same every time, so I never imagined it being done differently.

I always had my rectal temperatures taken in the diaper position, both at home and the dr's office. It was always held in place the entire time and insterted very far(or so it felt) up my rectum, especially by the clinic nurse. I was never covered up to prevent embarrassment, but I was too young to really care.

When I was little, My mom always took my temperature in my bottom, with me lying on my tummy, on the bed. She would hold the thermometer in place while it was registering...usually for about 3 to 5 minutes. Watching her shake down the thermometer, I would eagerly anticipate the wonderful feeling I would get when the thermometer was in my bottom. Often, Mom would read my temperature out loud. I remember always hoping that it would be that I had "a fever", rather than a "normal" reading. That would mean another temperature would be taken later on. Jenn.

As I stated on a previous post on this thread I can not recall any experiences of having my temperature taken rectally. It probably happened at some point, too long ago to remember.A few years back I a got a friend to try rectal temperatures.They didn't have a rectal temp fetish but they did find the thermometer in their rectum stimulating. We took eachothers temperatures for awhile until we eventually both headed to colleges far apart.

The procedure for us was: Pants and underwear off. lying on back with legs in the air. Vaseline would be applied to the anus and thermometer. Thermometer would be inserted far enough so that it stayed in on its own, usually 3/4 of the thermometer. legs would be held together in the air by temp taker, Thermometer was left in until it beeped or for 5 mins.

I can safely say I envy Jennifer, Caleb and many more for having such clear memories and experiences of rectal temps

Mostly I was advised when younger that my temperature was going to be taken in my "backside", and I normally was on my stomach and if home sick, in pajamas had them pulled down (the bottoms, of course) and then my underpants pulled down. Cheeks spread and the thermometer after being shaken down and read, inserted into my rectum for between three and four minutes.Just left there. No hands holding it or palming it. All of my adult RTs and I've had my fair share were with me face down, "arch your hips", a phrase I came to understand meant put your butt up. That was so my underpants could be easily lowered. Then I could resume laying flat. Again the thermometer (mostly glass-mercury) was shaken down. Sometimes a sheath was put over the thermometer, but mostly it was a lubricant, either a vaseline type or a K-Y jelly type. On an occasion or two I had the thermometer inserted sans lube! I also had my adult temperature taken rectally with digital and IVAC/FILAC type electronic rectal thermometer probes.

I always take my gf's over the knee. BB except for sox and t- shirt in the winter. If she has a temp,the enema bag comes out.

For me for most the the time: Mom calls me into her bedroom. I see mom shaking a thermometer and see a towel on her bed. Mom
would tell me she's going to take it "the other way" No use to argue or plead so I pull my pajamas down to my knees, lay
facedown on her bed. As soon as my head hits the bed, I feel a "coolness" slide into my rear. Mom never ever
seperated my cheeks. She knows where to put it. I Lay there for a few minutes. I feel the RT taken out. Mom tells me to get up. I pull up my
pajamas bottom and leave. Mom never says a word after.

Mom sometimes takes my RT before she gives me an enema.
I get called into the bathroom, see the bulb and other stuff on the sink. I know what's going to happen--whining doesn't do anything. Have to take off my pj's (since I have to take a bath afterwards. While I take off my pj's, mom tells me she's going to take my temperature first. After I lay over a towel on a small stool, I feel the "coolness" slide into my rear. I lay there for several minutes (while mom fixes the enema bulb). I feel the RT being taken out and then mom gives me the enema (without saying a word)

I remember one summer, I was staying for 2 weeks at my aunt's ranch while my parents went elsewhere. I was 9.
I complained about a stomachache. My aunt felt my head and said she'll take my temperature. She took me to her bathroom. She took out a thermometer and vaseline jar from
a closet. Told me to take off my shorts. When I wasn't fast enough, she pulled the down along with my underwear to
my ankles. I had to take them off then lay facedown over her lap. To this day, I still can feel her seperating my cheeks and putting the RT into me. I do remember her cool hand on my rear.

The one and only time I was in a hospital (except when I was born) was when I had my tounsils out. I was in 7th grade. I remember waking up after surgery (I still remember how my throat was very dry and with a cottonball in my throat) A female nurse came in (i remember she was young and good looking). She rolled me om my side. Informed me that she needed to take my temperature. I remember the backside of my gown being untied, my cheeks being seperated and something "cool" sliding into my rear.
This happened again the next day and I was a little embarrassed since I was more aware of where I was.
When I got home, I was in bed for 2 days and my mom took my RT several times in her usual manner.

Funny, because when I was growing up "the other way" was the mouth when you were a child. When I was told I was going to have my temp taken, it was just automatically assumed it was going in my bottom up through age 8, which was about the normal age to switch to oral, though some offices or moms went later. My mom's "child and infant care" book recommended rectal readings throughout a child's life, and other methods were listed second and third. And this was all in the late '70s and early '80s.

The doctor's office switched me to oral at age 9, and I don't remember how old I was at home, probably about the same. I had one "last hurrah" with rectal at the doctor at age 12.

I had to eras in my youth for my RT getting taken.

I was a smallish kid 5'4" and 105 until I was 13
up until I was 9 the usual procedure for for mom to bring me into her bedroom holding a towel, the RT and the waseline jar. Mom would sit down on her vanity bench and put the towel over her lap. I had to take off my pajama bottoms and lay down on her lap. I felt her fingers seperating my cheeks and the RT go in. Laid there for a few minutes. Mom was silent but she would carass my back to calm me.

After I was 9, Mom came into my bedroom, tell me to get out of bed, pull the covers down and lay a towel on the bed
I had to take my pajamasbottoms off and lay on my stomach.
After sh put in the RT, mom would sit by my side on the bed.

I never got my RT taken alot in my youth. Lots of enemas.
Most of my RT taking was while I'm in bed. Mom comes in with the RT. She pulls my covers down. I have to turn over on my stomach. When I was younger, mom pulled my pjs down. When I got older, I pulled them down. Last RT was when I was 13.

One time was different. Now as I think back was kinda funny. I was 12 at the time. I was getting ready to take a bath. Mom marched into the bathroom just before I stepped into the tub. I was naked. I was shocked as you can imagine. She said, "I needed to take your temperature"
(I just was getting over the flu). I saw her get out a thermometer case and vaseline jar from the closet Also
a towel. She told me to go into her bedroom. She marched
me out of the bathroom while I was completely naked into her bedroom. My little sister (she was 7) was standing by her bedroom watching this. Embarrassed.

Mom put the towel on her bed and I had to lay on my stomach. While my RT was being taken, my little sister came in. I heard her ask, "is Danny sick" Mom told her to leave. She just stayed there.

Mom asked me if I had a BM today. When I said no, she told me to go sit on the toilet for awhile when she through. If I couldn't do anything she'll give me an enema. I got the enema.

Dan your posting is very similar to what went on in many households. I know it did with me. Only exception my sister was 3 years older than me. My mom had no concern for my modesty even at age 10 and 11. Before I had my tonsils out each winter I would come down with cold after cold, rt after rt and an occasional enema thrown in. I would be my sister must of watched 99% of these events. Finally when I was 9 I had my tonsils out and the following winter was completely different. If my mom would of had them taken out earlier, I think I would of saved a lot of embarrassing situations.

At home the procedure was: I would be told to lay on my stomach on my bed. My mom would lower my PJs or underpants and insert the thermometer. I was told to lay quiet with my mom's hand holding the thermometer end. When the three minutes were up, my mom would take out the thermometer and I would watch as she read it

At the doctor, I would be lying on the exam table in my underpants. The doctor would examine me and then he would go to the cabinet and take out the thermometer and some vaseline. He would then take down my underpants and tell me to roll over on my front. He would insert the thermometer and hold it in place while he looked at his watch counting down the required 3 minutes. My mom would be standing next to the table while this took place.

My mom took my temperature this way until I was 13...The doctor continued this method until I was 16

int nederlands je kunt vertalen toch? mijn oudste broer die heel vaak op mij paste omdat ik best wel vaak ziek was en dan was er altijd de zelfde procedure toen ik 9 was maar ook toen ik 13 was ik werd in de huiskamer geroepen mijn ouders waren altijd werken en moest over de knie en kreeg de thermometer in de bibs en als ik niet stil wilde liggen een klap en 2 minuten extra, ik weet nog 1 x mijn broertje was 6 en lag op zijn schoot met de meter in zijn bibs hij was wild en de meter viel op de grond en brak hij kreeg een flink pak billenkoek en moest naar bed maar er werd een nieuwe thermometer gehaald en werd op ons allebei uitgeprobeerd die zelfde avond ik was 13 en op de knie in de bibs ik was geen eens ziek
