I think glass thermometers are much better. They don't have a battery that will die, and there's the quality control issue with metal thermocouples which alter the accuracy of digital thermometers. Just can't beat the gold standard accuracy and simplicity of mercury moving through a glass rod. My wife takes all of our temperatures with an old Atlas rectal glass thermometer when we're under the weather. When my youngest son gets sick, she'll take his rectal temperature with the glass thermometer right before going to the pediatrician. Upon arrival, they'll take his temperature with the new forehead scanning thermometer, and will often be off by more than 1.3 - 1.5 degrees. My wife tells them about the rectal reading and that's usually what they end up going with.
