It seems that the main reason for the demise of the glass thermometer was the mercury fill. Despite being obsolete I believe without the mercury scare tactic a few years ago mercury fill glass thermometers would still be on store shelves. Glass thermometers would fill a void created by the worthless high tech thermometers.

I feel that environmentally friendly Geratherm thermometers look like they belong in an aquarium rather than an instrument to measure body temperature. Since many have expressed a preference to the standard mercury fill glass thermometers, why not continue to manufacture the standard glass thermometer with the same non-toxic fill media called gallistan found in Geratherm thermometers. That is, a glass thermometer that is triangular in cross-section, 4.0 to 5.5 inches long, uniform thickness, a white background stripe on one side, a choice of triangular or blunted point non-entry end, and long silvery (oral) or stubby (rectal) contact end. There are many consumers that are disappointed with the inconsistent readings obtained by electronic thermometers and may be interested in returning to an updated glass thermometer.

It should be noted that it takes up to five minutes for Geratherm thermometer to register. Imagine how many kids could keep a thermometer in their mouths for three minutes but would not be successful in maintaining a glass thermometer in their mouths for five minutes. It might mean a rectal temperature for those kids.

Of course, those of us with the rt fetish prefer glass, no doubt. However....the overwhelming majority of Americans today,I'm guessing around 95%, probably don't take their temps. rectally, and many of the younger set, will never know what a rectal temp. is. Technology works toward efficiency and reduced cost. And the mercury scare is a real concern, especially in a hospital environment. Electronic thermometers are cheap, quick, accurate, and painless. You can bite on them, without any dire consequences. Try convincing the medical profession to turn the clocks back. Good luck !!

I agree with you to a point. The problem is that the use of non-invasive thermometers have been disappointing to many home caregivers. The main issue is that the home variety of electronic thermometers do not have the sophistication nor subjected to the same quality control of electronic thermometers used by medical professionals. In addition, many caregivers do not have the experience to properly obtain a quality reading. That is why it is unfortunate that the thermometers are returned to the store, thrown out, or given away.

The same quality control problem exist with probe thermometers although any concern of technique can be ruled out as a cause for an incorrect reading. It may be more out of frustration to return to using a glass thermometer or tries one for the first time. For that to happen, the caregiver would have to have a glass thermometer on hand or the caregiver would have to acquire a veterinary type rectal glass thermometer (which is longer and thicker than the standard four inch glass rectal thermometer) through an Internet purchase, thus requiring the caregiver to go through a great deal of trouble just to obtain a glass thermometer.

Another issue that a caregiver that has never used a glass thermometer to take a youngster's temperature is the fear that an unfortunate accident may occur while the thermometer is in the youngster's mouth. However, glass rectal thermometers are designed for that purpose. However, the caregiver would have a great deal of resolve to proceed to take a youngster's temperature rectally otherwise, an inaccurate reading would have to be accepted when using an electronic thermometer to identify a fever.
