If I were taking a child's temperature, I would go rectally, with a glass theremometer and here is why:

* A rectal temp is the most accurate
* When it comes to electric thermometers - what if the batteries are bad? A false reading could occur

I guess I'm just old fashioned but child or adult, rectal temps should be taken at any age. This gives no chance of error or question of the person's temp.

I agree wholeheartedly with pastisbetter. Rectal temps are the most accurate and are appropriate for any person, no matter what age. If doctors and hospitals started having rectal temp only policies at any age, I'd be the first to line up and pull my pants down, even at age 43. When I take my temp, I only take it rectally for this reason. And I only use a glass thermometer. Partly for the accuracy and partly because I like how i feels in my butt.

Tim #2,
Unfortunately glass thermometers are not an option for many people since they are very hard to come by.
